Pakistani-American tycoon Tanweer Ahmed has donated $9 million to Islamabad's National University of Science and Technology (NUST), establishing an enduring endowment fund to support nearly 200 underprivileged students annually through scholarships. This contribution stands as one of the most substantial donations by an overseas Pakistani to a local university. Ahmed, based in Houston, expresses intentions to extend this initiative to other universities while ensuring the perpetual operation of the NUST scheme.
The formal launch of the endowment fund, scheduled for next month at NUST Islamabad, is expected to draw Pakistan's top leadership. In an interview, Ahmed emphasizes his commitment to fostering talented Pakistani students in cutting-edge sectors such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Information Technology (IT), and emerging technologies, foreseeing significant benefits for Pakistan's future.
NUST Rector Engineer Javed Mahmood Bukhari lauds Ahmed's approximately $9 million investment in the university's science and technology park, with 50% of the project's income allocated to an endowment benefiting financially disadvantaged students. This initiative aims to perpetually support bright Pakistani students pursuing world-class education in advanced fields.
